Samuel Martín, Minister of Environment and in charge of the Papagayo Camping Area, was this Thursday on the program Buenos días, Lanzarote of Radio Lanzarote - Onda Cero to answer some questions, including the death of a dog due to another that broke loose from its owner in this place last weekend.
The councilor began by saying that "in principle, dogs were prohibited in the campsite, but many people requested specific plots in one of the areas and the regulations say that the animal must be tied up at all times and supervised by its owner".
Specifically, Martín said that "the dog that fatally attacked the Yorkshire terrier was a Labrador breed" and that "that same day the Yaiza Local Police acted and the owners of the deceased dog filed the corresponding complaint in court".
He also pointed out that his Area prepared a report that they transferred to the Yaiza City Council with the documentation provided with information on the events and the report from the security of the space and the maintenance staff "so that it acts in the manner that corresponds in this case being the municipality of Yaiza".
In addition, he pointed out that "we have spoken with the legal services of the Cabildo de Lanzarote to see if we should take any measure beyond the one that has been taken, which has been from the first moment that the dog left the facilities while decisions are made".
"In this case, I believe that there is a protocol with which the Animal Welfare Area of the Yaiza City Council has to act and I don't know if among them is to monitor to declare the dog potentially dangerous even if it is not within the breeds considered as such because it is a Labrador and one is surprised because they are usually very affectionate animals although there is a difference in size and, if it falls on top of a small dog it can hurt it", he continued.
On the other hand, he emphasized that "in these cases you have to be very careful because there are many companion animals such as dogs and cats that are cared for by their owners and these types of problems have never occurred and with this case we cannot generalize either, people must be clear about the protocol and even put more signs". "We also ask for the cards of these animals", he concluded.
