The PSOE of Arrecife has denounced that Yonathan de León maintains that declaring the Hotel Oriental a BIC is bad news because “it does not match his irresponsible and short-term management.” The socialists do so in reference to the mayor's statements in a media outlet in which he stated that the BIC declaration will not help save the old town.
“It is not explained in any way that a mayor, who should celebrate that the maximum protection measures are put in place on the property, since the technical reports have been validated by the Cultural Heritage Council of the Canary Islands, continues with the obstinacy of defending his party's position above the interests of Arrecife,” said Alfredo Mendoza, councilor and spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Arrecife City Council.
In this sense, Mendoza added that the position maintained by Yonatan de León, placing the centrality of the recovery of Arrecife's heritage on the owners, demonstrates his lack of ambition as mayor. “Pretending that the preservation of Arrecife's heritage is subject to private initiative without public leadership demonstrates the inability of the government group, which also continues without approving fundamental issues for the protection of heritage such as the municipal catalog of assets,” Mendoza indicated.
“It's something irrational”
“During the processing of the license, the Popular Party questioned the rigor and validity of the technical reports and the professionalism of the staff of the Historical Heritage unit and the experts who signed the reports to defend their position and even accused the PSOE of 'pulling out of their sleeve' the requests for prudence so that the architectural and historical values of the building were examined meticulously. Continuing in the same line is already an irrational position,” recalled the spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Arrecife City Council.
In this sense, the PSOE of Arrecife has clarified that the PSOE's vote “was always conditioned on the report being sent to the Heritage area of the Cabildo, also registering a letter sent to the same area stating that the license had been approved favorably and therefore the demolition and from that moment the Heritage area establishes precautionary measures.
