A resident of La Graciosa was deprived of medical attention after suffering a heart attack. The events took place this Tuesday when the island was left without a doctor until five in the afternoon. The only doctor who was performing his work took sick leave early in the morning and left without waiting for anyone to relieve him.

According to the testimony offered this Wednesday to Radio Lanzarote by Marcos Páez, chief patron of the Fishermen's Association of La Graciosa, where the facilities of the Eighth Island's outpatient clinic have been located for more than a year, "the doctor took sick leave on Tuesday and at eight in the morning he left the island for Lanzarote". At that moment, La Graciosa was left without a doctor, without anyone arriving to relieve the one who had left until five in the afternoon. With such bad luck, the doctor fell ill and the same day a person suffered a heart attack without being able to be attended to.

Finally, the neighbor had to be transferred in a helicopter from Insalud to Lanzarote to be treated at the General Hospital, where he is now hospitalized.

Relief

But the unfortunate coincidences did not end there. In the words of Páez, "a woman broke her arm and had to come to Órzola in a special boat" due to the absence of doctors in the Chinijo Archipelago.

Meanwhile, the relief did not arrive until five o'clock on Tuesday afternoon. According to Páez, who consulted with the Health Area officials about the reasons for such a delay in the arrival of the substitute, the procedures were delayed by problems in the reception of the fax that reported the doctor's sick leave.

Regarding the fact that the La Graciosa outpatient clinic is located in the Fishermen's Association, the Minister of Fisheries commented that the works of the new medical center "are about to be awarded". Apparently, the outpatient clinic will be ready in approximately one year.
