From the first lights of dawn, Yaiza had a different air today. It was not just any day. The southern municipality was preparing to celebrate the big day of its Patron Saint, Our Lady of Los Remedios, and from very early on, the neighbors were finalizing the last details to attend punctually one of the central moments of this festivity: the Solemn Eucharist in honor of the Virgin.
On this very special occasion, the image of Our Lady of Los Remedios carried in her hands the Holy Rosary sent by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his recent visit to the Canary Islands.
At 7:00 PM, with the temple completely full, the silence typical of anticipation gave way to the first chords of the entrance hymn, "Here I am," masterfully performed by the Yaiza Coral Group, under the direction of Professor Nuvi Tavio García.
From that moment on, the celebration took on an especially solemn dimension. The voices of the Choir, perfectly blended, enveloped the interior of the temple, bringing to the ceremony that touch of elegance, sensitivity, and reverence that such a significant day demands.
The Eucharist was presided over by the titular parish priest of Yaiza and Archpriest of Lanzarote, Jonathan Almeida, and concelebrated by the priests, Francisco José García, parish priest of San Bartolomé and Tinajo, and Leonardo José Graterol, parish priest of Tías, who accompanied the faithful in a celebration marked by devotion and sentiment towards the Patron Saint of the municipality.
The temple of Yaiza, a reflection of the traditional religious architecture of the Canary Islands, offered a setting of singular beauty. Its robust walls and characteristic wooden elements housed, once again, the image of Our Lady of Los Remedios, the undisputed protagonist of a day in which tradition and faith walked hand in hand.
The Virgin's throne displayed a careful floral ornamentation that further enhanced the beauty of the venerated image. The floral decoration of the temple also contributed to creating an atmosphere of special solemnity, as if every detail had been placed to pay homage to the Lady of Yaiza.
And if the image of the Virgin presided over the celebration, the voices of the Yaiza Coral Group were responsible for setting music to the feelings.
Under the direction of Professor Nuvi Tavio García, each chant was performed with finesse, precision, and sensitivity. The director took care of the smallest detail of a musical performance that accompanied the different moments of the liturgy, from the Lord, have mercy and the Gloria, to the Offertory and the Communion chant.
But it was, without a doubt, when the chords of the "Hymn to Our Lady of Los Remedios" began to sound, that the emotion reached one of its most intense moments.
The voices rose through the temple and, for a few moments, the words seemed to take a backseat to the emotion reflected on the faces of those present. Emotional glances, respectful silence, and feelings on the surface accompanied a performance that provided the musical finale to a Eucharist experienced with deep solemnity.
It was a celebration in which prayers, faith, and devotion were present from beginning to end. And in that atmosphere of spirituality, the chants of the Agrupación Coral de Yaiza, finally directed by Professor Nuvi Tavio García, contributed to further elevating the feelings of the faithful.
The Virgin goes out into the streets of Yaiza
After the Solemn Eucharist, another of the most anticipated moments arrived: the procession of the image of Our Lady of Los Remedios through the streets of Yaiza.
The Virgin left the temple to meet her neighbors, accompanied throughout the entire route by numerous faithful. Walking alongside her were the celebrating priests, representatives of civil and military authorities, and a broad representation of the community.
At the head of the processional procession was the mayor of the municipality, Óscar Noda González, accompanying the Patron Saint on such a significant day for Yaiza.
The sounds of the Banda Municipal de Música de Yaiza provided music for the Virgin's walk. The processional marches accompanied a route in which respect, tradition, and devotion once again became visible in every corner of the municipality.
Upon returning to the temple, the image of Our Lady of Los Remedios was placed next to the church portico while the Music Band performed several processional marches, which were received with applause from the numerous gathered public.
And the final moment arrived
Amid cheers, applause, and displays of affection, the image of the Patron Saint once again crossed the portico of her church to return to her usual place. With her, a deeply emotional day came to a close, one of those that remain in the collective memory because they bring together tradition, music, culture, and, above all, the faith of a people in the same hours.
Yaiza surrendered to her Patron Saint once again.
Our Lady of Los Remedios was once again the center of all eyes and all feelings today, on a great day when the devotion of the neighbors, the solemnity of the Eucharist, and the beauty of choral music wrote a new page in the living history of this municipality.
A day to remember
A day to feel.
A day to say again, with emotion and pride.
