Two of the occupants of a boat that was rescued on Sunday night 83 kilometers from Gran Canaria committed suicide by jumping overboard as they could not resist the agony of the week they spent adrift at sea, according to survivors to the Police.
The boat was located on April 10 by the Sasemar 103 Maritime Rescue plane and rescued that same day by the Guardamar Calíope, which transferred the 17 people who were on board at that time to the port of Arguineguín: 15 adult males, two minor males and one adult female, all of Maghreb origin.
As reported shortly after by 112, one of the occupants of the boat needed to be transferred to a health center.
Emergency services sources explained this Wednesday to Efe that some of the survivors told the Police that same night at the port that they had been at sea for nine days, that the engine had stopped during the journey and that two of their companions were missing, who had thrown themselves into the water.
A police spokeswoman has corroborated these testimonies, although she specified that the agents in charge of the case of that boat are still questioning more occupants to have more details of what happened.
Due to the type of boat (wooden boat), the number of its occupants (19, including one woman) and its origin (Maghreb), the details of this group coincide with that of a boat that left Dakhla (Sahara) on Saturday, April 2 with 20 people, indicated a spokeswoman for Caminando Fronteras, the NGO that gave notice of its departure to the Spanish authorities.
