Two breakdowns registered in the water production and distribution facilities have caused 17 towns in Lanzarote to be without supply since this Wednesday, as reported on its website by Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa, managed by the Water Consortium.
This situation is causing "alterations and temporary suspensions of supply in different localities on the island". During this Wednesday, breakdowns were registered in production modules 1, 2, and 3 of the Díaz Rijo desalination plant (Lanzarote IV), located in Las Caletas, which continue to affect the production capacity of desalinated water. The Water Consortium points out that this maintenance stop was scheduled. "We thought the service would be restored in eight hours, but it ended up getting complicated," they explained.
As explained by the Water Consortium, this "is causing a progressive decrease in storage reserves, especially in the Zonzamas tanks". "We do not have sufficient resources, those tanks that the island should have," they point out. In this regard, they have notified the Government of the Canary Islands of a request "to recover those 60,000 cubic meters that we lost in 2014 and we hope that next year we can begin those works". Likewise, they have announced that in the coming weeks there will be further shutdowns of the Las Caletas desalination plant.
Therefore, the latest update reflects that the towns of Güime, Tao, Muñique, Soo, Tiagua, Teguise, Nazaret, and Tahíche have had no supply since this Wednesday. Furthermore, during Wednesday, the Consortium was forced to temporarily suspend the supply in Arrieta, Punta Mujeres, and Guatiza, due to insufficient available flow.
Likewise, at 7:00 PM, the service reported that due to low reserve levels, the supplies to the towns of Mala, Haría, and Máguez were also suspended.
For their part, technical teams continue to work to recover production capacity and stabilize storage levels.
Another breakdown occurred at the Janubio desalination plant, which in this case was an electrical failure. This caused the temporary interruption of its operation and, as a consequence, it was necessary to stop the Las Breñas pumping station, which affected the water supply in the southern part of the island. This caused the towns of Yaiza, Uga, and Mácher to be without supply.
From Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa they point out that for the moment it is not possible to determine the duration of the service interruption. The restoration of the supply, they warn, "will be carried out progressively, once the necessary conditions for the operation of the facilities and the distribution network have been re-established".
