The Tinajo City Council has presented the new 'OneUp' devices that facilitate rescue work in the event of a possible drowning.
The municipality, -the first on the island to incorporate these tools- will initially install them in two locations, one in Boca Chica and the other in the boatyard, to progressively add them to the rest of the beaches.
The mayor of the town, Jesús Machín, has indicated that this action will be "very positive, since our coasts will be safer".
Functioning
The 'OneUp' devices "not only allow saving lives but also minimize the risks of those who want to help the victim", the mayor explained, indicating that they will also help alleviate the "worrying" data on drownings in the Canary Islands.
These instruments are located inside the totems, which have several units. To use it, the glass must be broken with a small hammer that is located on the side.
Once the device is taken, it is thrown into the water and upon contact with it, it becomes a life ring to which the person who may suffer a drowning can hold on.
According to the mayor, "once the totem glass is broken, the emergency device is immediately activated: the 112 is notified in just ten seconds."
He also pointed out that it is "a totally sustainable initiative powered by solar panels”.
