A total of seven people have drowned on the coast of Lanzarote so far this year, according to a report issued by the organization “Canarias, 1,500 kilometers of coastline”.
“Canarias, 1,500 kilometers of coastline” adds that so far this year in the archipelago as a whole, 126 people have been affected by aquatic drowning accidents, and of that total 41 people have died, 7 have been injured in critical condition, 15 serious, 30 moderate and 7 minor, in 26 rescues.
By islands, Tenerife recorded 13 deaths, Gran Canaria, 8 deaths, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, 7 on each island, La Gomera four, La Palma and El Hierro, one on each island, and no deaths were recorded in Graciosa.
The platform has explained that the number of deaths so far this year, 41, represents “an increase of 28% compared to the same period last year, when there were 32", and twelve more than in January-August 2020, in which 29 people lost their lives.
85% of bathers had entered the water when sea conditions were adverse, while in the case of minors, 95% of accidents originate from a lack of attention and supervision by parents or guardians, the platform commented.
It has also pointed out that of the people who have died so far this year, 37% were adults, 34% were over 60 years old and 5% were minor victims. By sex, 73% of the fatalities were male, and 27% were female.
By activity, 64% of the deceased were bathers, 12% fishermen, 7% water sports, 5% divers, and the remaining 12% corresponds to the other section.
Ports and coastal areas are at the top as the environment in which the most accidents occurred, with 44% of cases, followed by beaches, 40%, swimming pools 9% and natural pools 7%. On the other hand, the afternoon hours bring together 78% of fatal drownings, while the morning 17% and the night 5%.
Twelve people have died in the Canary Islands this summer alone
The organization “Canarias, 1,500 kilometers of coastline” also reported this Thursday that in the Canary Islands there were twelve deaths by drowning in the water during the summer, a period in which 52 people suffered some type of aquatic accident in the archipelago.
In addition to the twelve deaths, four people were rescued in critical condition, 10 serious, 8 moderate and 1 minor, in the seventeen rescues that were carried out.
In July and August of this year, the number of minor victims increased, so that there was 1 deceased, 3 serious, 2 moderate, and 13 rescued unharmed; and the number of women injured also increased, with 4 deaths, 1 in critical condition, 3 serious and 1 injured with moderate character
During August of this year, there were 6 deaths from aquatic accidents on the Canary coasts, 2 injured in critical condition, 2 affected in serious condition, 3 moderate and 13 rescues.
The monthly mortality on the coasts and aquatic facilities of the Canary Islands is on average 5 bathers, exceeding the 4 per month of the previous two years.
