Tamar Luis, president of the Red Cross in Lanzarote, has submitted her resignation. She has done so through a letter that she has sent to the media in which she does not explain the reasons for this decision. In it, she reviews the work of the Red Cross, especially during this time of pandemic, recognizing the volunteers and public institutions.

Letter:

"Saying "goodbye" is never easy, that's why I don't say "goodbye" but "see you soon." It has been a journey of wonderful and very productive years. If I look back, I see images of the whole path we have traveled together, step by step, in a new and unknown situation for everyone. What can I say? It is not a full stop, only a semicolon, within me there is still a volunteer heart beating that began its journey back in June 2006 and that continues to beat with the same force in each action I take, as a doctor and as a volunteer.

The Red Cross has been a second home for me since 2006, when I joined this family, volunteering and participating in the humanitarian work that characterizes it. I started a project in June 2019 that completely changed its course when the pandemic broke out, a historical event that has meant a before and after. This pandemic has generated a health and socio-economic crisis, aggravating the migratory crisis, which we have been experiencing for some time, a situation that we have tried to respond to day after day with the resources we have at our disposal.

Today it is my turn to say goodbye to this project that I carefully took into my arms to lend my support, not only to the institution, but to all those people who, for some reason, have come to us to feel supported. Today, in the middle of 2021, and after a period of global pandemic due to covid-19, and pouring ourselves into thousands of families, providing help to homeless people, attending to the arrival of people on our coasts, advising on everything that my knowledge allowed me, always with a smile and motivated by humanitarian reasons, I would not like to say goodbye without mentioning those people who have walked by my side: volunteers, staff and colleagues, who deserve a word of respect and recognition for that joint effort, which reached the goal we were looking for, to help our neighbor.

Likewise, to recognize the support of the families, who have supported the dedication of these people, who have made their time and energy available to carry out these functions. I feel that we are a supportive people to be proud of, who in the worst moments have not hesitated to jump into the sea, offer shelter or give water and food to the most needy. What better than to encourage them to continue with this solidarity mission.

And, at this point, I would like to thank all the public entities and their teams for their understanding, trust and the work that has been done, joining forces when it was most needed. I would also like to thank them for the treatment towards me, towards my entire team and everything that, in some way, they have contributed to me. Each and every one of you has made me grow as a person in my daily life, both personally and professionally.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart and forever."
