The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, and the CEO of the Tourist Centers, Benjamín Perdomo, went first thing this Monday to the Boutique Hotel La Isla y el Mar, in Puerto del Carmen, to greet the prestigious and renowned chef José Andrés, who has been in Lanzarote for a few days recording a report on the island's gastronomy that will be broadcast by the HBO Max platform in more than 180 countries.

Corujo and Perdomo were interested in the work that the chef usually carries out and spent a few minutes discussing his experience on the island.

The kitchens are, without a doubt, the great passion of a chef who, in addition, has transcended world public opinion for his solidarity work. His NGO World Central Kitchen, founded in 2010 to respond to the food shortage in Haiti caused by the earthquake that devastated the island that year, is dedicated to supplying food in places around the world affected by natural disasters. His team served more than 3.6 million meals to the people of Puerto Rico after Hurricane María; he was at the foot of the canyon during the coronavirus pandemic; helped those affected by the La Palma volcano and has fed hundreds of refugees in the current war between Russia and Ukraine. This work has earned him awards such as the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord and the National Medal of Humanities awarded by US President Barack Obama, among many others.

"He is a human being of extraordinary dimension, a person committed to defending the rights of the most vulnerable who has risked his own life to bring a plate of food to tens of thousands of people affected by extreme situations," Corujo said after the meeting.

La Santa, Los Valles, Playa Blanca and the Tourist Centers are some of the many places visited by José Andrés during his stay on the island.
