Agents of the National Police and the Local Police of Arrecife have saved the life of a 58-year-old woman who tried to take her own life in the capital of Lanzarote.

The events took place last Sunday, May 4 at 9:15 a.m., when the agents went to the Argana neighborhood in Arrecife. Upon arriving at the area, the woman was disoriented, had self-inflicted wounds and tried to take her own life. At that moment, the police were able to save her by taking advantage of a distraction.

According to La Voz, this citizen suffers from mental health problems and has tried to take her own life on other occasions.

The Ministry of Health has Line 024, a free telephone line for attention to suicidal behavior. This telephone line seeks to help people with thoughts, ideations, risk of suicidal behavior, as well as their family members and loved ones.

The president of the Mutual Aid Group for People Affected by Suicide, Marta Ceñal, who suffered the suicide of her son at the end of 2017 in Lanzarote, highlighted in an interview with La Voz that "a person who commits suicide does not want to die, but to get out of that suffering," so ways must be found to alleviate that pain and avoid death.
