The staff of the Insular Hospital and the management team of the Lanzarote Health Services Management, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, paid tribute this Friday to Domingo de Guzmán, who has been the director of the center for 40 years, giving his name to a remodeled multipurpose room that from now on will be called Doctor Guzmán Room.

In an event in which the Director of the Health Area, Noelia Umpiérrez, the Manager of Health Services, José Luis Aparicio, and the directors of Primary Care and hospitals participated, as well as a large part of the workers of the Insular Hospital, Domingo De Guzmán has received recognition for his work at the head of the center for four decades.

Domingo de Guzmán joined the Insular Hospital of Lanzarote in 1982, when the center depended on the Island Council. After obtaining a doctorate in Geriatrics with the thesis 'Elderly in Lanzarote, a socio-health perspective', he focused his work on turning the center into a geriatric hospital that would serve the elderly population of the Island.

At the head of the Insular Hospital, Dr. Guzmán has been a promoter of the creation of the different units that the center has, such as the Acute Unit, the Medium Stay Unit, the Geriatric Day Hospital and the High Requirement Nursing Home. He also favored, together with his team of collaborators, the innovative creation in 1989 of the Center for Natural Activities and Useful Occupational Activities (CANTOU), through which thousands of users have passed since then.

On the other hand, and thanks to his efforts, in 2000 the Insular Hospital of Lanzarote became the first in the Canary Islands to be accredited for teaching and has the only Teaching Unit of Geriatrics in the Archipelago, in which 18 promotions of resident doctors have been trained and through which numerous health professionals rotate each year who come from different parts of the islands and the rest of Spain.

Under his direction and from the early years, a large part of the staff that currently makes up the center has been incorporated and has more than ten geriatricians, specialized psychologists, rehabilitation groups and a large team of health personnel specialized in Geriatrics and Gerontology, as well as assistants, social animator, orderlies and maintenance, cleaning and kitchen staff who attend to the needs of patients and residents.

On his last day at the head of the Hospital, Domingo De Guzmán received congratulations from his colleagues and the manager José Luis Aparicio, who dedicated a few words of gratitude for the work done and the work carried out during the last years that "make him a reference for all the professionals of the Management".
