The Official College of Architects of Lanzarote creates the “I Lanzarote Architecture Awards” with the purpose of "disseminating the excellence of architectural production on the island; recognizing the work of professionals who contribute to the achievement of quality work on the island of Lanzarote and La Graciosa; as well as the work and commitment of the architect within society", says the architect and dean of COALZ, Miguel Ángel Fontes.
The work carried out by COALZ for the creation of the “I Lanzarote Architecture Awards” is an "opportunity to promote quality architecture and urban planning to society, the commitment of our discipline as a cultural, environmental and artistic reference, as well as the reinforcement of the cultural and social character of architecture and urban planning, in its condition as an asset of general interest", explain from COALZ.
Architects incorporated into any College of Architects of Spain, as members or accredited, and executed in the area of the island of Lanzarote and La Graciosa in the last ten years, between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2022, may apply for the Awards. The deadline for submitting proposals will be March 1, 2023. In order to carry out this initiative, COALZ has sought collaboration from the Cabildo de Lanzarote, as the highest institutional representation of the island of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, aware of the importance of architecture as an asset of general interest.
"In turn, the Cabildo de Lanzarote, in its intention to involve society in decision-making that affects the common good, understands the vital importance of seeking synergies with associations, groups and other administrations, so it has sought the collaboration of the Official College of Architects of Lanzarote to create, together with the Historical Heritage Area, the “I Lanzarote Architecture Rehabilitation Awards” in its search to create heritage culture in favor of recovery, and therefore protection of the Cultural Heritage of Lanzarote, specifically of properties with historical and heritage values", says Fontes.
The work that COALZ was carrying out for the creation of the “I Lanzarote Architecture Awards” coincides in time with the preparations of the bases commissioned by the Cabildo de Lanzarote for the creation of the “I Lanzarote Architecture Rehabilitation Awards”, and that is why both institutions understood that it was an opportunity to work together to disseminate both awards in order to promote quality architecture and urban planning to society, the commitment of our discipline as a cultural, environmental and artistic reference, as well as the reinforcement of the cultural and social character of architecture, urban planning and the rehabilitation of architecture, in its condition as an asset of general interest.
Awards Ceremony
The awards ceremony will be held on March 23, 2023 in the Jameos del Agua Auditorium and will be open to the general public, with prior registration. "We will have the presence of public representatives of the different institutions of the island, architects, as well as different representatives of the society of Lanzarote. In addition, the president, councilors and councilors of the Superior Council of Colleges of Architects of Spain will also be present. The delivery of the “I Lanzarote Architecture Awards” and “I Lanzarote Architecture Rehabilitation Awards” has been organized to coincide in date with the celebration for the first time in history of a Plenary of Councilors of the CSCAE on the island of Lanzarote.
The College of Architects of Lanzarote and the Cabildo de Lanzarote will promote the dissemination of the selected works and the work awarded by the Jury in various specialized publications and media in order to publicize the result of the “I Lanzarote Architecture Awards” and the “I Lanzarote Architecture Rehabilitation Awards”.
