The Cabildo of Lanzarote has inaugurated this Monday the sculptural work "Homage to the Artisan Doña Dorotea" in Mancha Blanca, a work by the artist from Conejo, Rigoberto Camacho Pérez, which pays tribute to the figure and performance of Dorotea de Armas.

It is a bronze sculpture that is framed within the scope of sculptural realism, highlighting the figure of Doña Dorotea, set in the everyday life of her daily work.

The work has been presented by the Deputy Minister Marcos Bergaz, the Councilor for Crafts of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Carmen Guadalupe, and by the Mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, the latter representing the municipality where the artist was born and lived, in addition to the presence of neighbors, and family members of Dorotea de Armas.

"With this sculpture we want to recognize the legacy of Doña Dorotea, who inherited her talent from her mother and who has inspired so many ceramists in Lanzarote, the Canary Islands and throughout the country, being considered the precursor of the pottery trade on the Island", Bergaz highlighted.

For her part, Carmen Guadalupe recalled that "Dorotea is a benchmark and future generations of crafts and the island's population deserve to know her figure thanks to this work. That is why in 2016, the plenary session of the Cabildo agreed to recognize her work, so this piece responds in some way to this agreement."

Dorotea de Armas was born in the municipality of Tinajo in 1899 and died in her homeland in 1997. The ceramist stood out for introducing the traditional aboriginal Canary figurines in the iconography of her pottery works and one of her most notable works is "Los novios del mojón", inspired by pieces that were found in archaeological sites from the aboriginal era of the Island.

The mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, thanked the Cabildo for the initiative and encouraged everyone to preserve our traditions and recognize the value of artisans.
