The Covid outbreak originating in a gym in Arrecife now affects 37 people, as reported by the head of the island's tracking team, Baltasar Gómez, on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero.

As Gómez specified, 21 of those infected are users of the center, while the other 16 are relatives or people close to them.

"We are waiting for the General Directorate of Public Health to tell us if we are going to do some kind of screening intervention," said the head of the tracking team, who expects that "more cases" associated with this outbreak may appear.

"It is not normal for so many cases to continue to occur"

On the other hand, and after 19 new cases of Covid were reported this Thursday, Baltasar Gómez has expressed his concern. The fact is that he considers that "it is not normal at this stage of the pandemic" for "so many cases to continue to occur."

"Something is failing," he said, showing his "disappointment" that there are still "breaches." "The population has very clear and accessible information for a long time to be self-responsible. We don't need a Canary Islands Government or anyone to tell us what we have to do, we are old enough," he added.

In addition, he has complained that trackers still have to "play cat and mouse" because "many do not collaborate" when they call them. "Sometimes they tell you, if I give you the name of these two people they will kill me, because they will not be able to go to work, but sir or madam, imagine if one of those two people is sick what they can stir up in their family or in their work environment," he pointed out.

"We are not police and we are not against anyone," the head of the tracking team wanted to make clear, who nevertheless insisted that the rules continue to be followed "to the maximum", also urging those who have already been vaccinated not to relax.

"We are seeing cases of people who, having the two doses, become ill again. They do not develop a disease, some symptoms that complicate it, but there is still transmissibility, and the population must bear that in mind, it is not that I relax and ignore everything. We have to continue carrying out these measures, because if not this will never end," he concluded.
