The mayor of the Arrecife City Council, Astrid Pérez, on her behalf and on behalf of the entire municipal Corporation, has expressed her deep regret for the sudden death of the young Arrecife filmmaker Roberto Pérez Toledo.

At only 43 years old, Pérez Toledo passed away this Monday in Madrid after suffering a stroke last Tuesday. His death coincided with the representation, during these days, of his first play, 'Basic sign language manual to break hearts', at the María Guerrero Theater in Madrid, as reported by the Film Academy.

"We are absolutely dismayed by the loss of Roberto Pérez Toledo, a young man born in the Titerroy neighborhood with a great talent that has taken him very far," emphasizes Mayor Astrid Pérez.

"In addition to being an excellent director, he also stood out in his role as a screenwriter and producer, and at just forty years old he had already achieved recognition from the public and film critics." "From the Arrecife City Council we want to join in the grief of his family, friends and loved ones and convey our condolences." Roberto Pérez Toledo, a graduate in Audiovisual Communication from the Pontifical University of Salamanca, directed his first feature film in 2011 with Seis puntos sobre Emma and received, among other awards, the awards for best screenplay and best leading actress at the Malaga Festival. A few years later, he participated in the collective project about the end of the world Al final todos mueren (2013).

His short films include Vuelco (2005), Los gritones (2010), El amor es sordo (2010), Rotos (2012), Chicos que lloran (2015), Taras (2016), El poliamor explicado para madres y abuelas (2017), Flechazos (2017) or Antes de la erupción (2021), his last short film shot entirely in Lanzarote and which won the Award for Best International LGTBI Short Film at the Alicante International Film Festival.

Pérez Toledo's work also includes a feature film made within the #littlesecretfilm initiative: Los amigos raros (2014), Como la espuma (2017), Amor superdotado (2019), the first Spanish fiction series for Facebook Watch, and the feature film Lugares a los que nunca hemos ido.
