The heatwave that has affected Lanzarote and La Graciosa this past week has not only complicated the daily lives of citizens, but also made it difficult to sleep. The high nighttime temperatures due to the mass of hot air affecting the archipelago have resulted in several consecutive days of tropical nights, where temperatures have not dropped below 20 degrees.
Although humidity is not taken into account on tropical nights, it is a determining factor in the sensation of heat, especially in areas like the Canary Islands. The more humidity there is, the greater the sensation of heat. This is because, to cool down, the body sweats, but if the air is very humid, it is much harder for sweat to evaporate, causing the body to heat up.
Furthermore, the heat increases inside homes, depending on the duration of high temperatures, as most homes are not insulated against adverse weather conditions like heatwaves.
During the early morning of August 6th, temperatures on the island made it difficult to fall asleep. In Playa Blanca, for example, the minimum temperature was 23.8 degrees, very similar to the temperature recorded at Lanzarote Airport and in Arrecife, 23.2 and 23.3 degrees, respectively. In La Graciosa, the thermometer also did not drop below 23 degrees, according to Aemet data.
Meanwhile, in Haría, the mercury did not drop below 21.2 degrees, while in Tías and Tinajo, a minimum of 20 degrees was recorded.
During the early morning of August 2nd, the town of Haría experienced a torrid night. These nights are characterized by temperatures that do not drop below 25 degrees, making it significantly difficult to sleep. Specifically, the northern town reached 25.8 degrees during the night.
Over the next few days, the State Meteorological Agency forecasts that minimum temperatures will remain high, between 21 and 23 degrees.
