Lanzarote has registered six new coronavirus outbreaks in the last week, according to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands. One of them occurred in a gym and affects six people, and the other originated in an educational center and has so far added five infections. In both cases, some of the positives correspond to subsequent family ramifications.
Regarding the sports outbreak, it should be remembered that it is the second one that has occurred on the island in a gym. The previous one totaled more than 160 associated cases, including infections within the center and the ramifications that were later transferred to the family and social environment of those affected.
In total, the Canary Islands has registered 81 new outbreaks this week with 416 cases. In addition to the six in Lanzarote, 55 have been detected in Tenerife, 18 in Gran Canaria and two in Fuerteventura. By area in which they have occurred, 31 are outbreaks of social origin, 26 family, 13 work-related, five educational, four sports, and two in socially vulnerable groups.
In general, all outbreaks have fewer than 10 associated cases except for five outbreaks that exceed that figure, including a sports outbreak with 23 cases affecting Tenerife and La Gomera, two others with 13 and 11 cases in Tenerife of social origin, and another work-related outbreak on the same island with 11 cases and related to the food industry. In Gran Canaria, the largest outbreak has 15 cases, with work and family derivations.
Of the five educational outbreaks, all with family ramifications, one has been reported in Lanzarote, with five positives, and the rest in Tenerife with fewer than 10 affected.
As for the sports outbreaks, in addition to the one registered in a gym in Lanzarote, there have been three others in Tenerife, one in a gym with seven cases, and two linked to soccer clubs, the aforementioned one with 23 cases and ramifications in La Gomera, and another with three associated cases.
