Rogelio Herrera, promoter of the conservation of Playa Chica, dies

Herrera, oceanographer of the Government of the Canary Islands, highlighted the values of the Cagafrecho SCI, a figure contained in the EU's Natura 2000 Network

The Tías City Council has expressed its "deepest" condolences for the death of oceanographer Rogelio Herrera Pérez and extend its condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, as well as to the scientific community of the Canary Islands.

Rogelio Herrera Pérez, Doctor of Marine Sciences from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and oceanographer in the Biodiversity Service of the Government of the Canary Islands, highlighted the natural values of Playa Chica and the Cagafrecho area, promoting the conservation of this space.

The environmental management expert stressed the importance of the veriles of the Cagafrecho Special Conservation Zone (SCI) and, especially, of the coral communities, among which the black coral stands out. Rogelio Herrera stated that the development of the blue economy should be facilitated, making it compatible with the conservation of the area so that the activities are sustainable.
