Reports of gender violence in Lanzarote have increased in the first nine months of the year and are already 18% higher than in 2023. This is according to data from the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence of the General Council of the Judiciary, collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.

Between January and September of this year, 461 complaints have been registered in just nine months in Lanzarote for crimes of violence against women, pending the data for the last quarter of the year.

Most of the complaints were for crimes of injury and mistreatment, included in Article 153 of the Penal Code, which involve psychological harm, minor injuries or mistreatment without injury towards women with whom they have or have had a sentimental relationship. So far this year, 249 complaints have been registered against aggressors for crimes or offenses of this type, 84 of them during the months of June and September.

Thus, the second most frequent crime in Lanzarote is that of crimes and mistreatment, included in Article 173 of the Penal Code, which contemplates "degrading treatment, seriously undermining their moral integrity" and that which "habitually exerts physical or psychological violence" on their partner or ex-partner and on their descendants, ascendants or siblings. This 2024, 80 complaints have been registered for this type of gender violence, 45% more than in the first nine months of 2023.

Thus, crimes against sexual freedom and indemnity, which include sexual assault, sexual harassment, exhibitionism and those related to prostitution, sexual exploitation and corruption of minors, grew by 350% on the island, where nine complaints were registered for this reason.

Between January and September 2024, up to 30 complaints were filed against convicted abusers for violating the measures dictated by the Court, including restraining orders or the prohibition of communicating with the victim, 114% more than in the same period of the previous year.

Thus, a total of 24 breaches of sentences have also been registered, 4% less than in 2023.
