The Directorate General of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert for high temperatures in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, as well as in the rest of the archipelago from 08:00 on Sunday, July 5.
Aemet forecasts that the episode of high temperatures will last for several days, with an expected start on Sunday in the eastern islands and a tendency to progressively spread to the rest of the islands during the next week, especially from Tuesday onwards.
This episode of high temperatures is associated with a mass of warm air of African origin, which will initially affect Gran Canaria, also extending to areas in the interior of Fuerteventura during Sunday and to Lanzarote, with special impact between Tuesday and Thursday.
Maximum temperatures equal to or greater than 34 degrees are expected in inland areas of Lanzarote and 38 degrees could be reached on Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday of next week, temperatures will continue to be very high, around 37 degrees. On Friday, however, temperatures will begin to drop.
Aemet warns that the intrusion of African air may be accompanied by weak calima, mainly over the eastern islands, without significant concentrations of dust on the surface being forecast. Given the expected duration of the episode and the evolution of the models, it is not ruled out that the alerts issued by Aemet may be extended.
