The area of Nursing External Consultations and Functional Tests of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has experienced significant growth in the last three years, going from 36,070 consultations attended in 2022 to 60,256 that were carried out in 2025, which represents an increase of 67%.

Health has assured that this sustained increase in the healthcare activity developed by nurses has been accompanied by a significant reinforcement of human resources driven by the Lanzarote Health Services Management, with the aim of guaranteeing quality care and responding to the needs of the population.

Staff Reinforcement

In this period, and with the aim of managing the increase in consultations derived from the growth of healthcare activity, 18 nurses and 20 auxiliary nursing care technicians (TCAE) have been incorporated, forming a team of 56 nurses and 63 auxiliaries distributed across the different services and specialties. Likewise, three senior radiotherapy technicians have been incorporated into the area of External Consultations and Functional Tests.

The increase in staff has made it possible to reinforce areas such as Dermatology, Diabetic Education, General Day Hospital, Special Cardiology Tests, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Allergies, Vascular Surgery wound care, and the Pain Unit, in addition to guaranteeing coverage of activity in the different areas of Functional Tests.

New Consultations, More Activity

This reinforcement of professionals has led to the design and creation of new services, among which the launch of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nursing Consultation, dependent on the Digestive service, stands out, to offer closer and more specialized monitoring to these patients.

In addition, care linked to the colorectal cancer screening program and colon preparation prior to diagnostic testing has been reinforced. The number of screenings has been progressively increasing in recent years, going from 794 carried out in 2022 to 1,660 that were done last year, with a growth of almost 109%.

Likewise, a new Neurocardiology consultation now allows for the monitoring of patients with cross-pathologies, the coordination of treatment plans, as well as patient education.

On the other hand, the reinforcement of Nursing in the Pulmonology section has made it possible for the hospital to incorporate ecobroncoscopia, a minimally invasive test that allows specialists to diagnose lung diseases and thoracic tumors without the need for open surgery.

In the Dermatology area, the new nurses attended a total of 6,310 teledermatology consultations last year and carried out 996 specialized cures, while in Ophthalmology, three nurses have been added to perform complementary tests. Diagnostic and follow-up activity in Cardiology has also been reinforced with the hiring of a nurse specialized in reading and controlling implantable devices, pacemakers, and Holter monitors.

For their part, improvements in Otorhinolaryngology have led to an increase of more than 50% in the number of tests such as audiometries. Compared to the 1,676 performed in 2022, 2,607 were performed last year. Likewise, in the Ophthalmology section, the increase of more than 70% in campimetry tests stands out, with 2,106 tests performed in 2025.

Person-centered care

The Director of Nursing at Hospital Universitario Doctor José Molina Orosa, Teresa Salagre, emphasizes that "the growth in activity reflects the consolidation of the role of specialized Nursing within hospital care and the trust that patients place in our professionals. The expansion of staff allows us to continue moving towards more accessible care focused on people's needs."

The Manager of Health Services, Pablo Eguia, values the work done to adapt healthcare resources to the growth in demand, and highlights the boost of new specialized consultations, which strengthens the role of Nursing as a key element in the quality and efficiency of the public health system.
