The Vice President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, accompanied the students who this Tuesday begin the University Entrance Exams (PAU) in the Canary Islands, for which 10,742 students will compete this year in fourteen venues on seven islands of the archipelago.

Together with the Vice Minister of Education, José Manuel Cabrera, and the mayor of the town, Leopoldo José Afonso, Domínguez visited the venue that is premiering this course in Puerto de La Cruz, and with which the Ministry of Education, directed by Poli Suárez, has managed to facilitate the transfer to the exam for hundreds of students from the north of Tenerife.

For the Vice President of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, the incorporation of new venues this year for the PAU exams has been "a complete success, as it brings the exams closer to the students" and avoids long journeys on days marked by the nerves and tension typical of exams.

In this regard, he highlighted that this "decentralization makes it easier for students to have more time to focus on the exams and face" crucial days for their academic future "in better conditions." He also wished "all the luck in the world" to the more than 10,700 young people competing in the PAU this year, whom he defined as "part of the future and development of the Canary Islands."

"Today is a great day for all the boys and girls who have been working all year," said Cabrera, who expressed his conviction that, in addition, the students taking exams from today "will bear fruit," and that, as in previous years, "great results" will be obtained.

Results that will also be possible thanks to the logistical effort of the venues, which the Vice Minister also thanked and among which, for the first time, Puerto de la Cruz is included, "a success," according to José Manuel Cabrera, which the mayor valued as "wonderful"; while thanking the Government for its "decided commitment" to the municipality.

According to data provided by the two public universities in the Canary Islands, the total number of students enrolled in the 2026 PAU amounts to 10,742 (9,158 in the general phase). Of these, 5,458 correspond to the University of La Laguna (ULL) and 5,284 to the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).

Of the total enrolled, 4,393 are boys, and the majority, 6,349, are girls, of whom, in the general phase, 9,158 have registered (3,839 boys and 5,319 girls). The rest, 1,584 students, are taking the specific phase (893 belong to the ULL and 691 to the ULPGC).

By universities, the ULL registers 4,565 enrollments in the general phase, with 1,904 male students and 2,661 female students, while the ULPGC counts 4,593 enrollments, of which 1,935 correspond to boys and 2,658 to girls.

Within the ULPGC scope, Gran Canaria concentrates 3,975 enrolled students, with 3,466 in the general phase, compared to 757 enrollments in Lanzarote (662 correspond to the general phase) and 552 enrolled students in Fuerteventura (465 in the general phase).

By modalities and access routes, the Arts branch brings together 471 students, distributed between 235 from the ULL and 236 from the ULPGC; while the Humanities and Social Sciences modality brings together 3,754 enrollments, with 1,829 in the ULL and 1,925 in the ULPGC, and the Science and Technology modality registers 4,777 students, of whom 2,423 belong to the ULL and 2,354 to the ULPGC.

The general modality adds 159 enrolled students, with 78 in the ULL and 81 in the ULPGC, while 1,033 students with a Bachelor's degree obtained in previous years are counted, who are taking it to improve their grade or complete phases, with 345 corresponding to the ULL and 688 to the ULPGC.

Finally, students from Vocational Training amount to 548 students, all of them registered at the ULL, as the ULPGC groups together in the Bachelor's category students accessing from Higher Level Training Cycles and those from previous years' Bachelor's degrees, who are only taking the specific phase.
