Microalgae have arrived at La Garita beach in Arrieta. This has been confirmed to La Voz by the NGO Ren, which is in charge of monitoring this enclave.

The warming of the oceans and the concentration of organic organisms in the water are elements that latently influence the proliferation of microalgae. Their presence can be verified by bathers because of their smell and brown tones. In addition, it is increasingly common on the coasts of the Canary Archipelago.

As confirmed by the NGO Ren, it was during noon this Tuesday when it was discovered that there were microalgae in this coastal town in the municipality of Haría. However, due to the small amount detected, the beach has not been closed to swimming.

As this newsroom has been able to verify, through the webcam prepared for this, the beach remains with several dozen bathers and the yellow flag is flying on it.

The Government of the Canary Islands has repeatedly warned that in the presence of these organisms, the town councils must install signs or warning signs for beach users. In addition, it has insisted that a red flag is not necessary, but a yellow one as it is not "a serious risk to human life or the health of people"

Recommendations

The regional Executive has recommended in these situations to refrain from bathing and avoid contact with the material deposited in the sand in areas with visible concentrations of algae or foams. In addition, avoid standing in favor of the wind to reduce the possible inhalation of aerosols on the shore.

For water sports, they suggest the use of neoprene garments that prevent contact of water with the skin and whose openings fit well to prevent the entry of water, since the entrapment of microalgae between the skin and the garment increases the contact time and the effects.

After having contact on the foot with the microalgae, they should shower or rinse, as well as wash or dry the clothes and material that has come into contact. To conclude, see a doctor if necessary.
