The City Council presented the Haría 2021 Awards on Wednesday night, in an institutional event held in the auditorium of the Jameos del Agua. The event began with the constitution of the presidential table, formed by the first deputy mayor, José Torres Stinga, and the instructors Alejandro Hernández Perdomo and Evelia García Fuentes, councilors of Festivities and Culture respectively. They were in charge of reading the files that collect the reasons why it has been decided to grant these awards, destined to people and groups that have stood out for their dedication to the municipality.
The first to receive the award were the residents of the fishing village of Órzola who participated in the rescue of the migrants who shipwrecked last November on the coast of this town. The councilor Evelia García presented them with the gold badge of the City Council and José Torres Stinga presented them with the award that distinguishes them as the Haría 2021 Award. The award was collected by Armando Tavío León, who on behalf of all the "Heroes of Órzola" gave a few words of thanks, recalling some details of how they carried out the rescue.
Next, the relatives of some of the residents who could not be present at the event went on stage and the Councilor for Festivities presented them all with a scroll that accredits them as the Haría 2021 Award.
Immediately afterwards, the gold badges and scrolls were presented to the other two winners, the memorialists Óscar Torres Perdomo and Jesús Perdomo, by Torres Stinga and Evelia García. Afterwards, the second vice president of the Cabildo, Marcos Bergaz, presented them with the highest award that accredits them as the Haría 2021 Award.
Óscar Torres Perdomo addressed all those present and, also on behalf of his partner, wanted to thank them for the distinction made for the work they have been doing in recovering, preserving and disseminating the history of the municipality and the island of Lanzarote. The event continued with the interventions of Marcos Bergaz and José Torres Stinga, closing the interventions section the mayor, Chaxiraxi Niz, through the projection of a video.
The mayor regretted not being able to be present on such an important day for the winners due to the quarantine she must do after having helped in the rescue efforts of the other shipwreck that was repeated in Órzola last week. The mayor stressed that these awards are an opportunity for the City Council and for the citizens to thank the work that certain people do in favor of the municipality and the society of Lanzarote in general.
On such a special night, the burning of the Facundo and the Fire Dance were also present through a video. The institutional event ended with the performance of the musical group Bohemia Lanzarote, directed by Juanma Padrón, presenting their show "Inmarcesible", a select musical journey with songs of Canarian roots and from the other side of the Atlantic, such as Cuba and Venezuela, which were highly applauded by the audience.
