The General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government has declared the end of the flood emergency due to rain, decreed for the first time this Saturday in Lanzarote, which has caused 222 incidents in Arrecife and Costa Teguise, at around 7 a.m. this Sunday. The Canary Emergency Service attended to five people with minor injuries due to falls and slips.
In this last town in the northeast of Lanzarote, 97.5 liters per square meter have been recorded in the golf course area, 70.4 liters in the vicinity of the Aguapark, and 65.8 in Los Ancones, while in Tahíche more than one hundred liters were exceeded, according to data from the Security and Emergency Consortium of the island.
In the center of Costa Teguise, 62 liters were recorded, as in Las Cucharas beach and Altavista, while in Tenderete street in Argana, in Arrecife, 61 liters per square meter were counted.
With the help of firefighters from La Oliva, more than 30 incidents have been resolved at this time in Arrecife, related to garages, basements, homes, vehicles and even a flooded juvenile center, and a dozen in different parts of Teguise, where work continues to drain water in some large basements of the Trébol apartments, which have also been flooded.
This Saturday, when a downpour affected all these towns, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, and the manager of the Emergency Consortium of the island, Enrique Espinosa, went to the affected areas to offer "the most absolute collaboration of all the resources of the island corporation to those affected" by the heavy rains.
"We were surprised by a sudden rain that, mostly in Costa Teguise and Arrecife, caused hours of chaos and uncertainty, given the high level reached by the water in ravines and streets of both municipalities," Betancort said in a statement.
The president of the Security and Emergency Consortium, Francisco J. Aparicio, added that "being only in a pre-alert situation, the intense rain caught us off guard, although we acted quickly to safeguard, above all, the lives of those affected."
The rain forced this Saturday to cut off different roads in Lanzarote, such as the ascent of Tahíche, some of Costa Teguise or the bridge of the LZ-20, on the ascent to San Bartolomé from the capital, as they were completely flooded.
The first estimates of the Security and Emergency Consortium of Lanzarote have been 152 incidents registered in the municipality of Teguise and 70 in Arrecife, all of them related to episodes of flooding.
In addition, according to the records of accumulated water, between 13:00 and 15:00 hours almost 61 liters per square meter were recorded at the Tenderete street station, in Arrecife, and 62 liters per square meter in Las Cucharas, in Costa Teguise.
