A municipality in the Canary Islands registers 14 earthquakes in just over 24 hours

The National Geographic Institute assures that the first tremors, which were the ones of greatest magnitude, had a "purely tectonic" origin

A municipality in the Canary Islands has registered up to fourteen earthquakes in the last 27 hours. This is according to the National Geographic Institute in its earthquake history.

Specifically, the municipality of Agaete, in the north of Gran Canaria, has suffered more than a dozen earthquakes from 1:20 a.m. on Thursday until after 3:00 a.m. on Friday.

Of these earthquakes, the most significant was the first one detected in the early hours of Thursday, October 30. This one was magnitude 2.9 on the local Richter scale and occurred at a depth of seven kilometers. After this earthquake, another one of magnitude 2.3 was recorded 30 minutes later at the same depth.

Origin "purely tectonic" The National Geographic Institute reported that the three earthquakes recorded in the early hours of Thursday have a "purely tectonic" origin. Thus, the public perception places their values between level two and four of intensity on the EMS-98 scale.Ten Earthquakes in the Early Hours of Friday

Meanwhile, most of the earthquakes were recorded in the early hours of Friday, with up to ten tremors counted. On this occasion, the first of these was magnitude two and occurred five kilometers deep, at around 11:10 p.m. On this occasion, the public perception was of an intensity of two.

As a result, nine other tremors were recorded with a magnitude of less than one.
