Lanzarote's sports journalism is in mourning. This Wednesday, March 4, Jesús Lasso Cabrera, a benchmark of sports communication on the island, passed away.
With more than half a century of career, Lasso dedicated his life to narrating and telling the history of Lanzarotean sport, leaving an indelible mark both on the airwaves and in the collective memory of generations of listeners.
His first contact with the sports press occurred in 1973, when he was barely 15 years old, in the weekly Canarias Deportiva, specialized in regional football. He later collaborated on the Polideportivo program of Radio Popular de Las Palmas, a stage that allowed him to make the leap to Radio Las Palmas, from where he reported on sports in Lanzarote.
Once on the island, he was one of the voices of Radio Lanzarote, where he created and directed the program Polideportivo until 2011. Later he continued his work at Radio Marca Lanzarote. Between both stages, he accumulated more than 7,000 programs, becoming an essential chronicler of the island's sports news.
Throughout his career, he broadcast some of the most historic moments for Lanzarotean sport, such as the promotions of UD Lanzarote or the arrival to the Women's Honor Division of Vifirehati, in addition to countless competitions and events that marked milestones on the island.
His commitment to the profession also led him to serve as vice-president of the Association of Sports Journalists of Las Palmas, actively contributing to the strengthening of the collective in the province.
In 2024, the Cabildo de Lanzarote publicly recognized its half-century of experience and dedication during the VI Island Sports Gala, held at the Monument to the Peasant. Both the president of the institution and the Sports Councilor then highlighted that it was a "more than deserved" recognition for his involvement and professionalism in the island's sports communication.
