The Timple House-Museum hosted this Friday the presentation of the tribute that the Canarian wrestling will pay to one of its main supporters in Lanzarote, Francisco Díaz Torres, "Paquito", former wrestler, director, president of Tao and great promoter of grassroots wrestling on the island.
"Hopefully there are many Paquitos to continue promoting Canarian wrestling", was the wish most expressed by those who spoke this morning at the press conference, chaired by the Councilor for Sports of Teguise, Gerardo Rodríguez; the Councilor for Sports of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Alfredo Mendoza; the president of the Canarian Wrestling Federation of Lanzarote, Sebastián Lemes, as well as the main promoter of this tribute, the president of the referees of Canarian Wrestling, José Javier Hernández, and the journalist and scholar of Canarian wrestling, Manuel García Déniz; and which was also attended by the sponsors of the event, such as CICAR and Viggan Seguridad, among many other colleagues from the Tao Wrestling Club and the world of wrestling in Lanzarote.
Paco Díaz thanked everyone for this recognition and expressed his gratitude for the role of all the institutions, "which have to continue supporting with more force", and to which he asked for "special treatment so that our sport continues forward, such as including wrestling as a sports activity in all schools". "I am proud to say that the children of the schools in Teguise know our sport and the nobility it entails because we have taken care of imparting not only the rules of the game, but also the values and the good character and will of the wrestlers."
He also thanked companies such as the Cabrera Medina family "for everything they contribute to the society of Lanzarote and to Canarian wrestling, as Viscan Seguridad has always done, and the rest of the sponsors who have supported us throughout our history."
Finally, "Paquito" dedicated a special thanks to his Tao Wrestling Club, to which he has been linked since he was 25 years old, and to whom he already asks for the relay. This is how he expressed it in his emotional speech, in which he dedicated some beautiful words to his wife for all her support and for a lifetime shared and to his children, from whom he took time to dedicate himself to promoting Canarian wrestling.
The tribute will be held next Friday, November 25, at 8:00 p.m., in the Andrés Curbelo Pollo de Tao wrestling arena, where two combined teams will face each other, A under the name of the Tao Wrestling Club and B, CL Unión Canteras, with the participation of outstanding wrestlers from Lanzarote and the Canary Islands.
