Calls for gender violence skyrocket in Lanzarote in August and register the biggest increase of the year

In the vast majority of cases, these were calls where the woman was in emergency situations, with an imminent risk to her life.

Calls for gender violence increased by 39% in the month of August, compared to the same period in 2024, the largest increase of the year. This is according to data from the Care Service for Women Victims of Gender Violence on 112, collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.

In total, throughout the eighth month of the year, 163 calls were registered for different types of violence, mostly for physical violence without sexual assault (69) and non-physical violence (66).

Of these cases, in the vast majority of cases, these were calls where the woman was in emergency situations (106), with an imminent risk to her life, followed by calls to request information (40) and, to a lesser extent, with an urgent risk (17), which, unlike the emergency situation, in this case the situation is subjective, but may be prioritized.

In comparison with the month of July, calls for gender violence to 112 grew by 21% in one month. The largest increase between one month and another has occurred to date in the month of March, when they grew by 36%, that month 128 calls for gender violence were registered.

 

Arrecife, the municipality with the most calls for gender violence

By municipalities, Arrecife (74) has been the town on the island where the most calls for gender violence have been registered throughout the month of August. After the capital of the island, Tías (27), Yaiza (19), Teguise (18), San Bartolomé (thirteen), Haría (nine), and Tinajo (three) are located.

By islands, Lanzarote is the third island with the most calls for gender violence, only behind Tenerife (785) and Gran Canaria (665) and ahead of the neighboring island of Fuerteventura (131).
