The Department of Festivities of Arrecife was preparing an online Carnival for this 2021 but, given the current situation of the pandemic on the island, it has been suspended, as confirmed on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero by the councilor responsible for the area, José Alfredo Mendoza.
"We can't do absolutely anything", said the councilor, who said that the Carnival groups are the first to be "very aware" of the reality and that "they want this to pass as soon as possible so as not to jeopardize the carnivals of 2022".
As Mendoza explained, since November they had been working on the idea of organizing some online carnivals "to keep the flame of the Carnival groups alive" and help them "not disappear and stay in this year so difficult for everyone".
"The line of work was to do an activity that we could all enjoy on social networks, in streaming or on television channels, but with the collaboration and participation of the groups and the circumstances that the previous situation allowed us. That is, meeting small groups of 10 people, where there was a representation of some Carnival group to do some performance that could be broadcast," he detailed.
However, "all that falls", said the councilor. And it is that the level of health alert in which Lanzarote is located (both 3 and 4 that will enter into force from Saturday) prohibits social and family gatherings outside the scope of coexistence, except in the hotel and restaurant industry, where however they can not exceed two people. Therefore, the Carnival groups "can not meet in their premises either" and are "totally stopped". "Our goal now is the 2022 Carnival and I think the 2021 Carnival will be simply testimonial, nothing, we are going to spend some dates like any other day". concluded the Councilor for Festivities of Arrecife.
