"No to the closure of food markets. They comply with all the security measures required by Health. Enough of incompetence". This is the message that a farmer from the island wanted to send, who this Tuesday demonstrated at the doors of the Cabildo with a large sign with his demand.

Like other farmers and workers in the primary sector, Manuel has been affected by the closure of these spaces where they sold their products. In addition, he criticizes that this is the second time that this measure has been adopted since the health crisis of Covid-19 began.

The first was when the State of Alarm was declared and then, when many markets on the island had reopened after entering the "new normal", a new closure arrived, as the Government of the Canary Islands tightened restrictions in Lanzarote due to the rebound in cases registered on the island since the second half of August.

With his protest, this farmer denounces that there are no reasons to adopt this measure, when all security protocols were being complied with. In addition, he questions that these open-air markets are closed when all supermarkets and food stores are open.

In this regard, the Councilor for Commerce and Tourism of Arrecife, Armando Santana, has pointed out that the order came directly from the Government of the Canary Islands, through Public Health, and that the City Council had to abide by it, despite understanding that they were guaranteeing security.

However, he has also specified that from next Saturday the 26th, when the additional restrictions imposed in Lanzarote are scheduled to be lifted, agricultural markets will be able to reopen their doors.
