The most anticipated night of the summer is approaching. Next Friday, June 23rd, various beaches of Lanzarote will host the night of San Juan with the lighting of bonfires. A question that all those in charge of making these bonfires ask themselves: what are the requirements to make them in a safe way?
The Security and Emergency Consortium has prepared a series of rules to take into account for its ignition and that must be met so that the night is safe and passes without incidents. A preventive campaign in which the advice and prohibitions to be carried out stand out.
As a first measure, it is essential to inform the City Council about the place where the bonfire is going to be placed, in order to facilitate the work of the firefighters in the event of a fire.
Regarding the advice, for everything to work correctly, it is important to choose a safe place to light the bonfire, recommends CECOES. Avoiding proximity to vehicles, buildings, trees, etc. The fire must be away from the stacked material around six meters for each meter of height.
In addition, the area must be cleaned in particular to avoid any light material that may subsequently spread the fire or come off with the wind. Also, watching the bonfire at all times is a measure to take into account. And have some means of extinction available such as buckets of water, hoses, fire extinguishers, etc.
Once the night is over, it is essential to make sure that the bonfire is completely extinguished and cover the remains with earth. In addition, as a last measure, collecting the waste and cleaning the place, all the guidelines would be met.
Among the prohibited materials, the Emergency Consortium advises against using deodorants, insecticides, explosive materials, plastic containers, papers or fabrics, tires, foam rubber, among many others.
