The UGT union in Lanzarote celebrated this Wednesday the 10th Edition of the Miguel Barrios Miralles Awards for Union Work in commemoration of International Workers' Day. This event, which highlights the achievements and efforts of workers on the island, took place this year at the Casa de la Cultura Benito Pérez Armas in Yaiza.

The event took place at 12:00 noon, in which the "dedication and commitment of those who have significantly contributed to the union movement in UGT Lanzarote" was recognized. In this edition, the award winners were the delegates of Urbaser R.S.U Arrecife, "for their firmness in defending the rights of workers" and Antonio Santana, the delegate of the Company Committee of the Arrecife City Council, "for his outstanding contribution in the development of the functions of the company committee of the Arrecife City Council".

UGT points out that it "reaffirms its commitment to the creation and protection of employment", as well as to the "constant improvement of working conditions" for all workers. They add that a "greater distribution of the wealth generated" in Lanzarote is necessary, which allows the "personal, professional and family development of the working class of the island". It is time to "deploy a powerful care strategy within the framework of a recovery of all public services and citizen care", they highlighted from the union.

"It is essential to sustain our social protection systems, consolidating what has been achieved and delving into what is pending: the reform of unemployment protection, and greater effectiveness in active employment policies. The right to housing is the pending issue in Spain, and very especially in Lanzarote. Courageous housing policies are needed, with a clear and real commitment to the promotion of public housing and the creation of a public rental housing stock," they added.

Therefore, this May Day, UGT believes that "we must bet on full employment for a shorter working day and improve wages," they concluded.
