The residents of Caleta de Famara woke up this past weekend with a sad surprise. The coastal town, characterized by part of its unpaved streets, its fishing tradition and its five kilometers of sandy beach under El Risco, woke up turned into an open-air parking lot. This has been denounced by the Save Famara platform on social networks.

"It is terrible that the essence of a traditional fishing village is being annihilated, to make it available to mass tourism," the organization has denounced. These criticisms have come after the decision of the Teguise City Council, which removed one of the main lanes of the beach to turn it into a row of parking spaces.

After several meetings with the City Council, this movement reveals that the council led by Olivia Duque, "set aside" the opinions of the residents and "as always they have done what they think is best ¡What a misfortune!"

This decision not only causes an affectation to the landscape, but, according to Save Famara, "negatively affects all businesses and residents." The row of parking spaces installed by the council turns what used to be open views of the coastal town into views of the vehicles parked in front of the terraces of the premises or in front of the surf shops.

"This City Council has decided to turn all the spaces in the town into parking lots and the worst thing is that they are planning to make another one at the height of the bungalows (a protected area)"

"Famara is a beach, not a surf school, it is a fishing village, not a surfer camp," a user has denounced on social networks.

The platform has highlighted all the "needs" that the town has to cover. Among them, a bike lane that runs throughout the municipality "to ensure the lives of cyclists and the calm of drivers and also to promote sustainable tourism."

In addition to "fixing the characteristic windmill of the town" that has been broken for years, among others. "Let's make good changes for the town. Or if not, do nothing. But don't make it worse, please," he concluded.
