The College of Physicians of Las Palmas celebrated in Lanzarote a new edition of its tributes, an annual event of recognition, meeting, and coexistence between generations of doctors. The event, held at Los Fariones, brought together more than a hundred doctors and companions for an evening dedicated to those celebrating 50 and 25 years since their degree, as well as to the new specialists beginning a new professional stage.
The evening featured the participation of the president of the College, Elizabeth Hernández; the general secretary, Nicolás Santana; the deputy secretary, Marta León; and the representatives for Lanzarote, Aniuska Sutil and Javier Alonso. The event included the presentation of insignia to those honored for their Golden Jubilee and for their 25 years in the profession, as well as sashes to the new specialists.
During her speech, Elizabeth Hernández highlighted the special value of these tributes because they “represent the passage of time within our profession”: the enthusiasm of those beginning a new stage as specialists, the consolidated experience of those celebrating 25 years of professional practice, and the admiration for those reaching 50 years since completing their degree.
The president also placed the meeting at a particularly important moment for the medical profession, marked by the transformation of the healthcare system and by legitimate professional demands. “Caring for those who care is not an option, it is a necessity,” she affirmed, recalling that a strong healthcare system cannot exist without recognized, heard, and respected professionals.
In the Golden Jubilee category of the profession, Gustavo de Jesús Pineda Pineda and Miguel Alberto Medina Valenzuela were honored. Elizabeth Hernández conveyed to them the respect and gratitude of the College for representing “the living memory of medicine” and for having contributed, through ethics, commitment, and responsibility, to building the current healthcare system.
The recognition for 25 years in the profession went to Analia Yamila D’Alessandro Cabrero, José Javier Rodríguez Sabedra, Verónica Sansano Herreros, Yosvany García González, Janette Carolina Cicolini, and Nancy de la Caridad Echazabal Santana. The president highlighted that this generation has experienced a profound technological, scientific, and organizational transformation of medicine, but has managed to keep the essential intact: the trusting relationship with patients.
Likewise, the College welcomed the new specialists Miriam Megías Jiménez, María Teresa Navarro Navarro, Ellexis Cordovi Batista, Lara D’Haene, Jezabel Díaz González, Paola León Martín, Béntor Rodríguez Gil and María Elisa Torres Tejera. Hernández encouraged them to keep alive their curiosity, commitment to continuous training, and care for personal and emotional balance, especially in island territories like Lanzarote, where adaptation is part of daily life.
The ceremony included a musical interlude by singer Georgina Wilkinson, which provided one of the warmest moments of the evening. After the institutional event, attendees shared a dinner in another space within the Los Fariones venue itself, in an atmosphere of camaraderie and reunion.
The event once again highlighted the value of these tributes as a space for recognition, professional memory, and welcome to those who are fully joining the practice of specialized medicine. As Elizabeth Hernández recalled, knowledge, technologies, and organizations change, but listening, support, trust, and a vocation for service remain. "To cure sometimes, to relieve often, to accompany always," she concluded.
