The Anatomic Pathology service of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center affiliated with the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has registered an increase in its healthcare activity of over 23% in recent years.
The Anatomic Pathology laboratories at the hospital performed a total of 51,549 diagnostic studies on patient samples last year, including biopsies, cytologies, intraoperative studies, and clinical autopsies. This figure represents a significant growth in healthcare activity, exceeding 23% compared to 2022, when 41,763 studies were carried out.
This increase is due, in part, to the rise in surgical activity experienced by the Molina Orosa, the implementation and development of population screening programs, and the consolidation of advanced diagnostic techniques. The majority of studies consist of skin biopsies and endoscopic biopsies of the different organs of the digestive system.
To meet this growing demand, the service has incorporated two specialist physicians in Anatomic Pathology and two senior technicians in Anatomic Pathology and Cytodiagnosis in recent years. Thus, the team is currently composed of fifteen professionals who work with recently incorporated advanced technology equipment to continue improving diagnostic quality.
The head of the service, Odaly García, highlights that the expansion of the staff and the incorporation of new technological resources contribute to consolidating an efficient healthcare model and to offering agile and safe responses to both patients and professionals from other clinical services that depend on Anatomic Pathology diagnoses.
Anatomic Pathology, key in disease diagnosis
The Anatomic Pathology team plays a fundamental role in disease diagnosis through the meticulous analysis of tissues, cells, and organs. Their work is essential for identifying pathologies such as cancer, typing lesions, establishing prognoses, and guiding the most appropriate treatment for each patient.
To do this, laboratory professionals perform daily macroscopic and microscopic studies of tissues, liquid biopsies, and cytologies, combined with specialized complementary techniques that allow for precise diagnoses and the identification of essential biomarkers for personalized medicine. This information is crucial for making clinical decisions aimed at improving patient health.
Participation in population screening programs
Likewise, this service plays a decisive role in major population screening programs, such as those for colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and cervical screening for the detection of the human papillomavirus. In all of them, anatomical pathology study and analysis are crucial for the early detection of lesions and tumors in initial stages.
On the other hand, the laboratory has the capacity to immediately analyze samples from surgical interventions. This is a rapid procedure that allows pathologists to study the sample using freezing techniques during the operation itself and communicate the results to the surgical team in real-time, facilitating decision-making during the intervention.
