Once again, a new video on social media shows the impact that tourism has on the landscapes of Lanzarote. In this case, a recording broadcast on TikTok shows a tourist laughing while taking small stones from various areas of the island.
Specifically, the video begins with the phrase "my aunt saving on souvenirs", in which you can see how a woman tears a handful of stones from the reddish rock formations that are in the Charco de Los Clicos, in El Golfo. At the same time and being aware of the bad action, the relative who is recording says "see what tourists do, look at this lady what she is doing, destroying it, that's why they ban us" while everyone laughs.
In addition, you can also see the tourist picking up salt in one of the puddles in the northern part of the island, probably in La Santa or Tenesar. In this same area, the woman takes a large stone and carries it, although we do not know if with the aim of taking it. All this amid laughter.
Also, Lanzarote has not been the only one affected by these events, since these tourists also traveled to the neighboring Fuerteventura where they took another handful of the rhodoliths from Playa del Mejillón, known as the "Popcorn Beach". This area went viral on social media due to the similarity of the stones to popcorn, which has caused a great impact due to its overcrowding and the theft of many of these formations.
Respect for the landscapes is essential when visiting a place as a tourist, especially with the large number of visitors that Lanzarote receives in this case. In 2024, the island received 3.4 million, which has a great impact on the island, which, as you know, is a Biosphere Reserve. The action of the human being can be seen in corners such as Las Grietas or in the walks on the lava flows that cause the long queues to access Timanfaya.
