The Secondary Education Institute (IES) Yaiza has been distinguished with one of the Viera y Clavijo Awards 2025, the highest decoration awarded by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands to the non-university educational field.

The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, points out that “this recognition represents a source of pride for the entire island, because it reflects the level of educational work that is carried out in our centers”. In this regard, he adds that “IES Yaiza has built a project with its own identity, sustained for years and based on results, which connects education with healthy lifestyle habits and real values”.

For her part, the Minister of Education Ascensión Toledo, highlights that “this award recognizes a coherent trajectory, with an educational project that has managed to involve students and consolidate an active educational community.” Toledo also emphasizes that “IES Yaiza has become a benchmark in the integration of sport within the educational field, generating a model that transcends the classroom.”

The award recognizes the development of the Yaiza Triathlon project, an initiative that for more than two decades has incorporated physical activity as the backbone of the center. This approach has allowed fostering healthy habits, as well as values such as effort, perseverance, and teamwork, involving students in an educational process that goes beyond academic content.

Likewise, the project has favored the participation of other educational centers in Lanzarote, strengthening the exchange and social development of the students, and positioning IES Yaiza as an example of good practices in the Canarian educational system.

The Viera y Clavijo Awards, which recognize excellence, innovation, and contribution to the educational system of the Canary Islands, will be presented next May 15 at the Teatro Cine de Los Realejos, in Tenerife.
