Five of the seven projects that have received grants from the Biosphere Reserve of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa for their development on farms throughout 2026 were visited by the counselor Samuel Martín and part of his technical team.
The managers of Arrecife Natura, Reflota, Perma Terra, Participas, and Trib-Arte reported on the results of their respective actions to date, which were selected for their social, ecological, and natural heritage preservation value.
The counselor of the Biosphere Reserve of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Samuel Martín, congratulated the project managers and recalled that the call for grants corresponding to the 2026 fiscal year will be published in "the coming dates." “These grants will allow, if successful, to continue with this fundamental and valuable task for the island, due to its environmental sensitivity and commitment to the territory and the awareness of its inhabitants,” he added.
Chingafa, regeneration of crops through young people arriving by boat
The proposal of the cultural and social association Trib-Arte, Chingafa: Environmental, economic, and social regeneration, is aimed at recovering degraded agricultural land, promoting agroecological agriculture, and strengthening community cohesion. It is being developed on a one-hectare farm that was abandoned, where aromatic herbs, sweet potatoes, fourteen varieties of pitahayas, vegetables, and grains with native seeds are now grown.
Complementary composting activities, for the improvement of soil organic matter, will allow for the certification of sustainable products. Similarly, the social integration work is noteworthy, with training in cultivation techniques for young immigrants who arrived by boat and have reached the age of majority, who, after their training, become role models for others in similar personal situations.
Perma Terra and its community gardens
The association Perma Terra has eight plots in operation, more than a hundred associated members, and eight autonomous working groups promoting collective gardens and learning agricultural techniques. Through the Community Gardens for Sustainability project, training courses are offered in cultivation and group dynamics, as healthy interpersonal relationships are considered a priority for building community.
Sowing Biodiversity, a native initiative on a farm in Tegoyo
The proposal Sowing Biodiversity: Agroecological Dynamization and Citizen Participation, by the association Participas, is implemented on a 6,500 square meter farm in Tegoyo, owned by the Tías town hall, where work ranges from community gardens to the recovery of native seeds, creation of biodiversity rings, and promotion of ecological agriculture based on the premises of creating meeting spaces, learning, and providing a place for leisure. They value dry land, receive visits from various groups, and work on territorial stewardship.
Arrecife Natura and the collection of native flora seeds
The association Arrecife Natura, through the initiative Seeds for Education, Dissemination, Conservation, and Research of Native and Endemic Flora, offers training and participation to botany students and nature lovers. They conduct field practices focused on collecting seeds of native flora from Lanzarote, to learn to identify wild species and their seeds, apply responsible collection protocols without affecting natural populations, learn about regulations related to flora collection, and understand the importance of seed conservation for the future of island biodiversity.
Introduction to regenerative agriculture workshops with Reflota
Finally, the agricultural cooperative Reflota, through the action Regenerating Lanzarote and La Graciosa, offers introductory workshops on regenerative agriculture, whose attendance provides participants with a regenerative agent card. And although they have had to face a plague of cochineal scale, they know that resilience is a value inherent to the island and their farming work, and they continue forward without faltering.
