The Environment area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has denied authorization to the divers of the Spanish Navy to make a dive of "recognition" in the Tunnel of the Atlantis "within the powers assigned" in matters of "rescue of people". This space is the largest submerged volcanic tube on the planet and is part of the eruption of the La Corona volcano.
The Environment Councilor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Samuel Martín, has informed La Voz that the technical report of the Area negatively resolved this request. Among other reasons, the authorization was denied because the activity is "within the protected natural space of the site of scientific interest of Los Jameos."
In this space the activities of "scientific research and management" are allowed, as well as the relationship of "recordings or filming for informative purposes. However, it prohibits "bathing, recreational and sports diving inside and the realization of all kinds of military maneuvers", except in the states of Alarm, Exception and Site, according to the Conservation standards of the Space.
The counselor has assured that the use of this space, of 1,600 meters in length, was denied because "what they intended is not as a possible authorized activity in this space, according to its conservation regulations." It should be noted that in this space lives an endemic species of Lanzarote and unique in the world: the blind crab or jameito.
