The Data Center of the Cabildo de Lanzarote has published the crime indicators on the island in the first quarter of 2024. According to the data used by the European Statistical Office, 1,805 crimes were recorded between January and March of this year. This marks a growth of 7.4% compared to the same period last year.
Regarding conventional crime, a total of 1,532 cases are registered on the island, with an increase of 7.7% compared to the same quarter in 2023. This category includes different types of crimes. It is worth noting that there have been no intentional homicides, completed murders, or kidnappings in that period, although two attempted murders have been reported.
In addition, 26 are the serious and less serious crimes of injuries, affrays, and riots that have occurred in the first three months of the year, 38.1% less than last year.
Sexual offenses skyrocket in Lanzarote
Crimes against sexual freedom and indemnity have grown by 105.3% and have reached 39 cases between January and March. Meanwhile, sexual assaults with penetration have grown by 275% compared to the same period last year. So much so that 15 sexual assaults with penetration have been reported.
In addition, there is a growth in crimes against sexual indemnity freedom, which also increased by 60% and reached 24 cases.
Robberies decrease
Compared to the increase in sexual offenses, robberies on the island decrease significantly. Regarding robberies with violence and intimidation, a total of 20 cases have been recorded, which represents a decrease of 47.4%. The same occurs with burglaries in homes, establishments, or other places that have represented 49.4% less than last year and make up 39 cases.
The only thing that increases are thefts, reaching 430 thefts, with a variation of 10.3% and another 25 vehicle thefts, with 50%.
Drug trafficking cases are listed at 21, with an increase of 75%. Regarding the rest of conventional crime, 940 cases have been shown with a growth of 12.7%.
Cybercrime is the last crime that the study has collected, with 273 cybercrimes committed, which represents a variation of 5.8%. Within the category are the 256 cases of computer scams (8.5%) and another 17 cybercrimes, with a smaller variation of 22.7%.
The data from Arrecife, Teguise and Tías
According to the data provided by the European Statistical Office, which only collects data from Arrecife, Teguise and Tías, 651 have been the total number of crimes so far this year in Arrecife. This marks a variation of 11.3% compared to the first quarter of last year.
Regarding conventional crime in the capital, a total of 609 cases are registered, with a variation of 12.4%. This category includes different types of criminal acts. First, there is no intentional homicide, completed murder, or kidnapping in that period of time. Although an attempted murder is reported, but without any variation.
Teguise
The study has also been carried out in the municipality of Teguise. According to the data collected, 190 have been the total number of criminal offenses so far this year in Teguise. This marks a variation of 18% compared to the first quarter of last year.
Regarding conventional crime in the municipality, a total of 144 cases are registered, with a variation of 18% compared to the same quarter in 2023.
Tías
The municipality of Tías collects the final data of the study. It has counted a total of 335 criminal offenses so far this year and has presented a decrease of 18.1%.
Regarding conventional crime in the municipality, a total of 274 cases are registered, with a variation of less than 19.2%, compared to the same quarter in 2023.
