Canalink begins laying the Gran Canaria-Fuerteventura-Lanzarote submarine data cable

The public company Canalink, dependent on the Cabildo de Tenerife, has begun the deployment of the submarine cable that will reinforce the digital connectivity of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, once sea conditions have allowed it.

According to company sources informed EFE this Tuesday, the deployment is expected to be completed by the end of September, provided that weather conditions are favorable.

In a statement, the company indicated that the operation represents a new milestone in the development of the 'Ring' project, the new fiber optic ring that will connect Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura and involves an investment of 34 million euros, of which 23 are financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital) program.

In total, 553 kilometers of cable will be deployed on the seabed and then connected to the terrestrial station from which it will be integrated into the fiber optic network, an essential step for its future commissioning.

All work is carried out under "strict criteria" of environmental protection and in accordance with regional, national, and European regulations, minimizing the impact on the environment during all phases, the note states.

The system will consist of two independent submarine cables, an eastern one that will connect Ojos de Garza (Gran Canaria) with Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) and Playa Honda (Lanzarote), and a western one that will link Barranco de Tenoya (Gran Canaria) with Corralejo (Fuerteventura) and Playa Blanca (Lanzarote).

This double route will guarantee service continuity in the face of any eventuality and offer a much more robust infrastructure for operators, companies, and public administrations, the note explains.

The CEO of Canalink, Rubén Molowny, highlighted that "the cable's mooring in Gran Canaria represents a significant advance in the development of the 'Ring' project and brings us closer to the goal of providing the eastern islands with a robust communications infrastructure prepared for the digital needs of the coming decades."

Molowny stressed that "connectivity is today an essential element for economic competitiveness and territorial cohesion, and this project creates the necessary conditions to boost innovation, attract investment, and facilitate the development of advanced digital services throughout the territory."

Having an infrastructure with greater capacity and resilience expands the possibilities for the development of digital services in areas such as e-government, education, health, the business sector, and tourism, by providing more vigorous connectivity prepared for future needs, the note emphasizes.

The 'Ring' project is part of Canalink's strategy to reinforce the archipelago's digital connectivity infrastructures with the support of the European Union.
