British air collapse traps a family in Lanzarote: thrown on the floor and a thousand euros in a hotel

A British family was left stranded at Lanzarote Airport with hardly any food or water following the computer failure in the British air traffic control system (NATS) last Tuesday, which triggered a severe operational collapse at major UK airports and led to the cancellation of around 1,200 flights, affecting over 65,000 travelers.

According to the outlet Coventry Live, the couple Nathan Elliot and Fallon Swallow had their return flight to the UK with their two-year-old daughter and the child's grandparents scheduled for 6:35 PM on Tuesday, September 8th with EasyJet after spending a week on holiday in Lanzarote. However, when they arrived at the airport, they realized that the flight was delayed until 11:00 PM.

Several hours later, the airline informed the family that the flight had been cancelled and that another flight to London had been rescheduled for September 10th, two days later.

Although the airline initially promised to provide them with hotel accommodation for the night, EasyJet ultimately could not secure any establishment for them to sleep in. Consequently, they had to spend the night at the airport itself, sleeping on the floor. "Luckily, my daughter could sleep in her stroller, but my partner and I had a lot of trouble lying on the floor," Elliot stated.

Furthermore, they criticize that during the night, there were no shops or restaurants open at the airport. "Our only source of food or water was a vending machine that we discovered was broken," he said.

"We had juice and small snacks for my daughter, but my partner, my in-laws, and I had to share a couple of bottles of water that night," he continued.

After that first night without rest, the family managed to spend the last night in a hotel, where they spent 880 pounds (1,025 euros), although they are unsure if they will be reimbursed.

The problem didn't end there. The airline scheduled them a flight to Gatwick Airport in London, while the family's car was parked in Birmingham. Now, they will have to make their own arrangements to collect their car.
