The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Esther Monzón, intervened this Tuesday, June 30, in the Health Commission of the regional Parliament, where she highlighted the care improvements recently implemented at the Mala Local Clinic, where consultations for five medical specialties were incorporated, in addition to Family and Community Medicine. The implementation of this measure, which aims to bring hospital care closer to the population, has allowed 1,550 consultations to be attended at the clinic without patients having to travel to the Dr. Molina Orosa University Hospital to be seen by specialists.
Since this February, specialists from the Pneumology, Cardiology, and Endocrinology units of the hospital center are holding consultations at this Primary Care Clinic, specialties that are added to those of Traumatology and Dermatology, which were implemented between 2024 and 2025 in Mala.
This is an initiative jointly promoted by the medical directors of the hospital and Primary Care, which is part of the strategy to improve accessibility to specialized healthcare on the island.
This project reinforces and expands the experience initiated two years ago by the Cardiology service, which already conducts consultations in various health centers in Lanzarote, as well as Dermatology consultations, recently incorporated into Primary Care centers.
In all cases, these measures have been possible thanks to the incorporation of new physicians in the Dermatology, Pneumology, and Endocrinology services, which allows for decentralizing part of the care provided at the hospital and offering a more agile response to the population.
The implementation of this care model has resulted in a significant reduction in waiting times, especially in Cardiology, facilitating earlier evaluation and diagnosis of patients with possible cardiac pathologies and contributing to reducing pressure on hospital emergencies.
Pediatric Care
On the other hand, the minister reported that the Lanzarote Health Services Management currently has 35 pediatricians, of whom 26 are deployed in the island's health centers and nine work at the Doctor Molina Orosa University Hospital. In total, these specialists have attended a total of 53,200 consultations between January and May of this year.
Likewise, Monzón explained that the Haría Basic Health Zone concentrates half of the island's pediatric population, amounting to 423 children. This population, aged zero to fourteen, is mostly attended by the pediatric team at the Costa Teguise Local Clinic and the rest by those at the Teguise Health Center.
