Lanzarote returns to the rhythm of the school year. Nearly 21,500 students from Lanzarote and La Graciosa are called to join educational centers on the island in the coming days to start the 2026-2027 academic year, in a return to classrooms that will be accompanied by new teachings, more resources, and different infrastructure projects.
The first step will be on September 9, when classes in Early Childhood and Primary Education will begin. The following day, students from Compulsory Secondary Education and Basic Adult Education will join, while on September 11, it will be the turn of Baccalaureate and Adult Baccalaureate.
The incorporation will continue progressively. Vocational Training access courses will begin on September 14, and after the island holiday on September 15, Nuestra Señora de Los Volcanes, on the 16th, students of Vocational Training, Music, Plastic Arts and Design, Higher Artistic Education, and Sports Education will join. Language Education will finally begin on September 21.
More than 2,400 teachers to face the new academic year
Behind that first day of class is an important educational device. 2,471 teachers have been appointed for the start of the academic year, to whom 58 assistants and 27 Nursing professionals are added.
Enrollment also shows different trends depending on the level. While there is a slight decrease in students in early childhood education, Secondary and Vocational Training are experiencing growth, an evolution that once again places Vocational Training as one of the areas with the greatest potential within island education.
The availability of housing for displaced teachers, a difficulty that had conditioned some academic year starts in previous years, currently presents a more favorable situation thanks to the existence of specific offers for teaching staff.
Vocational Training gains ground
One of the most significant developments of the new academic year occurs precisely in Vocational Training. Lanzarote incorporates new training possibilities, including Dental Hygiene, within the health branch, while the CIFP Zonzamas expands its offer with new double degrees related to Commerce and Marketing and Administration and Management.
The commitment to these teachings also responds to an increasingly evident reality: Vocational Training carries growing weight among the island's students and has become a fundamental way to connect training with the needs of the labor market.
21 classrooms for education from 0 to 3 years old
Another of the changes accompanying the new school year is found in the early educational stages. The 0 to 3 years old Early Childhood Education network now reaches 21 classrooms, after starting with five groups at the beginning of the current government term. The plan is to continue expanding this offering in different parts of Lanzarote.
Infrastructure remains one of the major challenges
The return to classrooms will once again bring to the forefront the needs for growth and modernization of the educational network. Among the projects that are moving forward is the CEIP Alexis Tejera, in San Bartolomé, while actions and plans related to other centers on the island continue.
Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca are particularly linked to the needs arising from population growth. In Costa Teguise, the project for the future CEO continues to advance, while Playa Blanca maintains among its needs the expansion of educational offerings and the availability of land for new facilities.
The reality of modular classrooms has also not completely disappeared. There are still temporary facilities in different centers, while the administration intends to reduce their presence as new works and expansions are carried out.
New canteens and more services for families
The school year is not limited to classrooms. It also incorporates improvements in services that are part of the daily lives of thousands of families. Among the planned actions is the commissioning of new school canteens in Uga and Arrieta, while the unit schools also maintain their commitment to the eco-canteen model.
La Graciosa will have specific reinforcement
The educational community of La Graciosa will face the school year with specific attention to the island's characteristics. Teacher reinforcement has been planned to respond to the particularities of its student population and the needs raised by families.
More support for students and their mental health
The new academic year also incorporates measures that go beyond academic subjects. Attention to students' mental health gains prominence with the reinforcement of guidance teams through Psychology professionals, while the education system maintains specific resources to address the different needs of students.
Free books for certain levels
For families, one of the most visible measures will be the continuation of free textbooks at certain educational levels, including first, second, and third grade of Primary Education, first year of ESO, and the basic cycles of Vocational Training.
A calendar that already has all its dates
The academic year will maintain the minimum of 175 school days established for compulsory education. The first holidays will arrive with Christmas, from December 22, 2026, to January 7, 2027, while Easter holidays will extend from March 22 to March 26, 2027.
Regional, island, and local holidays will be added to these dates. In Lanzarote, February 9, 2027, Carnival Tuesday, will have a special impact, as it is a local holiday in Arrecife, San Bartolomé, and Tinajo, while Tías will also have February 2 as a local holiday. Haría will celebrate its local day on June 24.
Much more than going back to class
The start of a school year always has a routine element: prepared backpacks, new schedules, reunions, and nerves before the first day. But behind that seemingly simple moment lies an educational machinery that affects practically all of society.
There are nearly 21,500 students, more than 2,400 teachers, and hundreds of professionals and workers who are bringing the educational centers of Lanzarote and La Graciosa back into operation.
And this academic year also brings some changes that point towards the future: more places for 0 to 3 year olds, Vocational Training that continues to grow, new services for families, reinforced attention to student well-being, and infrastructure projects that will have to respond to an island that continues to transform.
