The Arrecife City Council has ordered this Saturday the hoisting of the red flag on El Reducto beach as a precautionary measure, prohibiting bathing after detecting a possible discharge of wastewater in the external overflow located next to Punta del Camello.
According to the City Council, it was the lifeguards who alerted to the presence of fecal-looking water in the vicinity of this coastal area, immediately activating the safety protocol to protect beach users.
The Local Police of Arrecife has drawn up a report on the possible discharge and the City Council has requested the Lanzarote Water Consortium to inspect the pumping stations it manages jointly with the Cabildo de Lanzarote and determine the origin of the incident.
The main hypothesis that the City Council is considering is that this discharge may be a consequence of the rupture of the sewage pumping network registered in Argana. As explained by the City Council, during the repair of this breakdown it was necessary to stop the operation of the pumps, a circumstance that could have caused the overflow of the pumping station located in the vicinity of Punta del Camello and, consequently, the detected discharge. However, the City Council emphasizes that this is a hypothesis that will have to be confirmed through the corresponding technical inspections.
Likewise, the Department of Beaches has requested from the Water Consortium, as the entity responsible for the island's sanitation network, a report on the causes of the incident and the performance of water analyses in this coastal area. In parallel, the City Council has also requested the intervention of Public Health to carry out the relevant analyses and determine when the beach can be reopened for bathing with all health guarantees.
