A total of 100 people were able to enjoy a whale watching during a five-hour journey along the southeast coast of Lanzarote on Saturday morning. An excursion organized by the Cabildo de Lanzarote as part of the activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the island as a Biosphere Reserve.
For this activity, the island's Biosphere Reserve Office had the collaboration of the Society for the Study of Cetaceans in the Canary Archipelago (SECAC). During the trip, Vidal Martín, president and scientific director of said NGO, announced the characteristics, peculiarities and importance of the marine mammals that inhabit our coasts.
Throughout the boat trip, it was possible to spot a group of striped dolphins, as well as three Gervais' beaked whales (a mother, a calf and a juvenile), a very difficult species to see. Several birds such as shearwaters, Bulwer's petrels and a storm petrel were also observed.
