The IFPMP Lanzarote Maritime-Fishing Professional Training Institute is hosting the Commemorative Conference on the 1824 Eruptions these days, with the participation of a hundred people. This is an initiative organized by the Cabildo of Lanzarote, in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the volcanic events of Tao, Nuevo del Fuego and Tinguatón.
The Geopark Councilor, Samuel Martín, thanked the City Councils of Teguise and Tinajo, as well as the National Park and the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers for their collaboration. “With these conferences we want to make known and manifest, through these presentations, activity tables and field trips, the latest volcanic manifestations that have occurred on our Island”, he pointed out.
During the first session held yesterday, Monday, the speakers Miguel Ángel Morcuende Hurtado, Itahiza Domínguez Cerdeña, Nieves Sánchez Jiménez and Carmen Romero Ruíz presented relevant aspects and practical cases related to the volcanic eruptions that have occurred not only in Lanzarote, but in the Canary Islands in general.
Likewise, the Official Chronicler of Teguise, Francisco Hernández, offered the presentation entitled The volcanoes, the sands and the Marian devotion of Lanzarote, while the director of the Timanfaya National Park Pascual Gil Muñoz addressed the fragility and conservation of this natural space. For their part, the professionals Leticia Pacheco Cabrera and Gustavo Santana Gómez spoke about the Tinguatón volcano and the consequences that its eruption caused on the Island.
Among other presentations, the one offered by Javier Dóniz, professor at the University of La Laguna, who explained the importance of tourist resources in Geoparks of active volcanic islands, stood out. The day concluded with a round table. This Tuesday the conference will be completed with a field trip to visit and learn more about the areas affected by the 1824 eruptions.
