The oceanic vessel 'Río Segura' of the Civil Guard, based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, surprised on May 31st two people practicing illegal underwater fishing in protected waters of the Chinijo Archipelago.
The intervention occurred while the 'Río Segura' was carrying out an operation to monitor and protect vulnerable species in the area. The agents detected the two individuals aboard a pneumatic boat between the island of Montaña Clara and Roque del Oeste, within the limits of the Natural Reserve.
The investigated were practicing free diving and carrying fishing rifles. At the time of the action, they had already captured 14 pieces - including abades, groupers, sama roquera, sargo breado and rock brotola - with a total weight of 41 kilograms. Both the fish and the fishing equipment were seized.

The Civil Guard reminds that this activity is prohibited within a perimeter of 500 meters from the low tide line of the islets of Montaña Clara and Roque del Oeste. In the case of Roque del Este, the restriction is extended to a mile radius as it is a zone of maximum protection.
